France has made a bold move in offshore wind energy by launching the first floating foundation for the EFGL (Éoliennes Flottantes du Golfe du Lion) project. Developed by Ocean Winds and Banque des Territoires, this 30MW floating offshore wind farm strengthens France’s role in Europe’s clean energy future.
🌊 Leading Floating Wind Development in the Mediterranean
The EFGL wind farm stands over 16 kilometers off the coast of Leucate and Le Barcarès in the Mediterranean Sea. With water depths between 68 and 70 meters, the site demands floating wind technology—offering France a chance to push beyond shallow-water limits.
By embracing this approach, France taps into more of its offshore wind energy potential, especially in regions where seabed-mounted turbines aren’t feasible.
⚙️ Advanced Engineering and System Details
The EFGL project includes:
-
Three Vestas offshore wind turbines, each generating 10MW, for a total of 30MW
-
WindFloat® semi-submersible foundations from Principle Power
-
Each foundation weighs 2,000 tonnes, rises 22 meters, and spans 80 meters wide
Fabrication partners Eiffage Métal, Smulders, and logistics provider Geodis completed the first foundation at the Port of Marseille Fos, a major industrial and maritime center.
🚢 Deployment Schedule and Progress
The team successfully launched the first floating platform in May. The other two units will follow the same route by the end of the month. Crews plan to complete turbine installation and offshore deployment by summer 2025.
Through this step-by-step rollout, France demonstrates its growing technical capability in offshore wind energy, especially in floating applications.
🌱 Delivering Clean Energy and Climate Benefits
Once in operation, EFGL will:
-
Power around 50,000 homes annually
-
Cut carbon emissions by approximately 60,000 tonnes each year
-
Showcase the practical potential of floating offshore wind in European markets
This project supports the EU’s broader goal of building a sustainable energy system that sharply reduces reliance on fossil fuels.
🇫🇷 France’s Commitment to Renewable Innovation
EFGL marks a turning point for offshore wind energy in France. With public-private collaboration, smart engineering, and bold innovation, France is setting a new standard in floating wind development.
This project doesn’t just deliver clean power—it also sends a message: France is ready to lead in the future of offshore wind energy.
